A Tribute to my Father
by Dane Czaplicki on Dec 18, 2023
As the festive lights twinkle and the aroma of holiday delights fills the air, I find myself immersed in the enchanting magic of Christmas. However, this year, the season takes on a new significance as it coincides with the first anniversary of my father's passing, a man whose legacy continues to inspire me. In this first year without him, I did a lot of thinking, drawing parallels nearly everywhere to the wisdom he either directly or indirectly bestowed upon me. This morning, as I journaled my thoughts, and read Morgan Housel’s new book – Same as Ever, he touched on compounding, and his story had my mind bring together the magic of compounding with my high emotions of the day. It caused me to reflect upon the profound parallels between the timeless magic of Christmas, the finite lives we live, and the transformative power of compounding—a positive force that has become my hedge against the relentless passage of time.
The magic of Christmas, with its twinkling lights and nostalgic carols, has for me always been a time of wonder and joy. Anyone that knows me, knows the Christmas carol whistling starts sometime before Halloween. Why? I am not sure. Perhaps it is because it is a season that captivates our imagination, reminding us of the importance of love, generosity, and cherished moments spent with family. Similarly, for me, the magic of compounding is a financial alchemy that always caused me wonder and joy. Its ability to transform the small, consistent efforts of today into significant results for tomorrow, although mystifying, is more real than Santa, with much longer lasting gifts. It is an investment and life principle that mirrors the spirit of Christmas, emphasizing the value of cherishing a belief, part real, part magic and the importance in creating joy in our lives.
My father, not much the investor, did teach me a thing or two about making the most of time each day. A balance I truly needed as I can tend to go overboard on the compounding side. He left me not only with cherished memories but also with a profound understanding of the importance of appreciating time while also letting it work for you. The lessons he imparted go beyond the realm of finance; they transcend into the art of savoring life's precious moments. He for one loved the holidays, despite or perhaps because of his father’s early passing two days before Christmas so many years ago. In this same vein, despite the sadness of the present, I, like him and because of him, as a son and father, will not let a little inevitable death get in the way of the magic of Christmas. I will work like him to teach those I love to appreciate the present, fostering a sense of gratitude for the people who shape our lives.
As an investment professional, I've come to view compounding as a tangible representation of my hedge against time. It's a strategy that truly compliments the wisdom he shared. While appreciating the present, make small little deliberate, long-term choices that stand resilient against the relentless ticking of the clock. In the face of life's uncertainties, compounding becomes a steadfast companion, ensuring that the seeds we plant today blossom into a legacy of financial security and abundance. There we have it, live today like it may be your last, but not like it will be your last. Enjoy this holiday but as you do make little commitments to making memories (and investments) that will last for your family for generations.
This juxtaposition of the magic of Christmas and the magic of compounding reinforces the idea that time, when respected and utilized wisely, can be a source of profound transformation. It serves as a reminder to be intentional with our actions, whether in building cherished holiday traditions or constructing a robust financial future.
As the holiday season unfolds, and I continue to navigate a world without my father, I find solace in the synergy between the magic of Christmas and the steadfast growth of compounding. Perhaps the greatest hedging relationship of all time. Together, they create a tapestry that weaves the past, present, and future into a meaningful continuum—a tribute to my father's enduring legacy and a testament to the timeless magic that resides within both the holiday season and the power of compounding.
